WE'RE GOING TO THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS!

The F.I.R.S.T LEGO League (FLL) SPIDERS team of Honolulu placed 1st in "Robotic Performance" at the local competition and was selected by FLL on February 17th to compete at the FLL Ocean Odyssey World Festival in Atlanta! In November, the SPIDERS competed against twenty-two public, private and home school robotics teams. On April 27-29th, 2006 the SPIDERS will represent Hawaii in a tournament of eighty teams from thirty countries.

That's good news. Now, we face a significant, immediate challenge: to raise $20,000 by April 1st to fund the SPIDERS' travel expenses. We are seeking individual and corporate sponsors who are interested in promoting excellence in math, science, and technology and investing in the next generation of competent employees and future community leaders.

The F.I.R.S.T. LEGO League tournament is an annual, theme specific, competition requiring each team to design, build, and program computerized robots using the LEGO MindStorms Kit. This year's theme, "Ocean Odyssey", required each team to present an ocean-related study which identified a problem (the SPIDERS researched ballast water/invasive species transmission) and provided a creative, research-driven solution. Also, each team's robot attempted to complete 9, real life, ocean-related tasks on a standardized competition table within two and a half minutes. Students developed problem solving skills and teamwork as the met this challenge.

The SPIDERS, our group of home schooled students ages 9-13, excelled! We are now proud to represent Hawaii at the FLL Ocean Odyssey World Festival tournament. We have received a matching grant pledge of $4,000, so the first $4,000 of your contribution will be doubled! We look forward to you joining the team and investing in the future of these children and of Hawaii.

Sincerely,

Kevin Dang, Head Coach.                   Carter Lam, Team Captain.
